Former NASA astronaut Ron Garan says seeing Earth from space gave him a profound new perspective on humanity and the planet we call home. After spending 178 days in space and completing thousands of orbits, Garan experienced what is known as the “overview effect.”
Looking down from orbit, Garan was struck by the thinness of Earth’s atmosphere. He described seeing lightning storms and glowing auroras before realizing that the paper-thin layer surrounding the planet protects every living thing on Earth.
Garan said he did not see economies, borders or divisions from space. Instead, he saw a living planet and felt a powerful sense of connection to people around the world. That experience led him to question a system in which economic interests can take priority over the planet’s life-support systems.
Since returning to Earth, Garan has advocated for environmental protection and global cooperation. Through initiatives including the Manna Energy Foundation and Fragile Oasis, he has continued promoting the idea that protecting Earth should remain a priority for future generations.
