The unbelievable story of Amanda Scarpinati moves me to tears

A Photo She Never Let Go Of

For many years, Amanda Scarpinati held onto an old black-and-white photograph showing a nurse gently holding her as a baby. That image meant everything to her.

The picture was taken in 1977 at a hospital in New York after Amanda suffered a terrible accident. At just three months old, she fell from a couch into a hot-steam humidifier, leaving her with severe third-degree burns. In the photo, her tiny head is wrapped in bandages while the nurse comforts her with care and tenderness.

Growing Up With Pain

As Amanda grew older, she went through multiple surgeries. Sadly, her childhood was also filled with bullying because of her appearance.

During her hardest days, she would look at that photograph. Even though she didn’t know the nurse’s name, the image gave her peace. It reminded her that someone, at some point, truly cared for her.

Searching for Her “Guardian Angel”

Amanda never stopped wondering who the nurse was. For 20 years, she tried to find her, hoping to thank the person who had shown her such kindness during one of the darkest moments of her life.

Eventually, she made one final attempt — turning to social media.

What happened next was nothing short of heartwarming.

The Moment That Changed Everything

Back in 1977, Amanda had been rushed by ambulance to Albany Medical Center in New York after the accident. There, a young nurse took care of her.

Photographs from that time captured the nurse holding baby Amanda, smiling softly as she cared for her.

A Painful Reality

Although Amanda survived, her journey wasn’t easy. She faced constant teasing and cruelty growing up.

“Growing up as a child, disfigured by the burns, I was bullied and picked on, tormented,” Amanda shared with the Associated Press. “I would look at those pictures and even talk to her, even though I didn’t know who she was. I found comfort in her kindness.”

A Message That Reached the Right Person

Still hoping to find answers, Amanda posted the photo on Facebook, asking for help in identifying the nurse. She wrote that she would love to know her name and hopefully meet her one day.

The post spread quickly — and within just a day, everything changed.

A woman named Angela Leary recognized the nurse in the photo. It was her colleague, Susan Berger, who had been working at the hospital in 1977.

At the time, Susan was only 21 years old and had just finished college. She had even kept the photos herself and had never forgotten the baby she once cared for.

A Reunion Decades Later

Susan recalled the moment clearly.

“I remember her. She was very peaceful,” she said. “Most babies cry or sleep after surgery, but she was calm and trusting. It was something special.”

After 38 years, Amanda and Susan were finally reunited in an emotional meeting.

A Moment That Meant Everything

“I don’t know how many nurses get to experience something like this,” Susan said. “To be remembered after all that time.”

She added that she felt honored to represent all the nurses who had cared for Amanda over the years.

This touching story is a powerful reminder of how even a small act of kindness can leave a lifelong impact.
