An emotional “American Idol” Season 24 finale left viewers stunned after one major elimination changed the entire competition. Fans quickly flooded social media with heated reactions over the surprising outcome.
The “American Idol” Season 24 finale had everything fans expected from a three-hour showdown — emotional performances, celebrity guests, standing ovations, and one ending that instantly divided viewers online.
By the time show host Ryan Seacrest revealed the winner, social media was already exploding with claims that the results felt unfair.
Finalists Deliver Emotional Last Performances
According to TV Insider, finalists Hannah Harper, Jordan McCullough, and Keyla Richardson each performed songs connected to mentor Alicia Keys during the finale’s opening round.
Harper opened with “No One,” giving the hit a folk and bluegrass twist that judges praised immediately. Lionel Richie told her she had completely made the song her own, while Luke Bryan compared her voice to “walking through a beautiful garden.”
Richardson followed with “Unthinkable,” a performance Carrie Underwood called proof she was “ready for whatever amazing things are going to come next.” Luke Bryan added that Richardson had inspired him all season with her determination.
McCullough closed the round with “If I Ain’t Got You,” earning praise for his confidence and stage presence. Alicia Keys reportedly told him his performance was “money,” while Underwood joked his future career would make him plenty of it too.
Hometown Tributes Changed the Mood
The second round became far more emotional.
Harper returned with her original song “Married Into This Town,” dedicated to her husband and hometown. Underwood became visibly emotional while praising Harper for beginning and ending her ‘Idol’ journey with original music.
Richardson then performed “I Love the Lord” as a tribute to Pensacola, Florida. The moment left Underwood in tears. Richardson told Keyla her gift was meant to inspire people.
McCullough closed the round with “Dear God,” leading Underwood to jokingly ask whether the show could somehow declare a “three-way tie.” But that emotional high quickly turned into the night’s biggest shock.
The Elimination That Sparked Immediate Backlash
After the first two rounds, viewers learned that Richardson had received the lowest number of votes, eliminating her from the competition and leaving Harper and McCullough as the Top 2.
Almost instantly, fans flooded social media with disbelief.
On Facebook, one viewer wrote, “My fave! Shocked she’s out.” Another added, “I am stunned. I definitely can’t understand Jordan over Keyla 😮 I thought for sure it would be the ladies.”
A different fan insisted, “Jamal Roberts won last year. Keyla is the best this year but not winning the title is not going to stop her.”
Others accused the show’s voting audience of getting it completely wrong. On the same platform, one commenter bluntly stated, “America got it wrong!!!”
Not every reaction supported Keyla, though. One viewer argued, “Keyla has a great voice, but something about her attitude pushed me away. On the fade outs on pasts shows, you could see her not ‘happy’ for other contestants. I think her ego got her pushed out, not her voice.”
Others still believed Keyla deserved to stay. Another fan shared, “Hannah should have went home but we already knew she was gone take it. It’s fine tho Jennifer Hudson was eliminated and look at her now. You can’t block what God has for you keep pushing Keyla you got this girl.”
Still, the elimination clearly became the defining controversy of the finale. And things only got more heated from there.
Hannah Harper and Jordan McCullough Faced off for the Crown
With Richardson gone, Harper and McCullough performed their original audition songs one final time.
Harper revisited her viral original “String Cheese,” while McCullough delivered another performance of “Goodness of God,” earning yet another standing ovation from the judges.
Then came the final results. Seacrest gathered both finalists onstage before announcing that Harper had officially won “American Idol” Season 24, making McCullough the runner-up.
Viewers Accused the Finale of Being “Rigged”
Harper’s win immediately sparked another wave of online reactions — and some viewers were furious.
On Facebook, reactions to Hannah’s victory were sharply divided. Someone else remarked, “Jordan should have won. God knows.” A different viewer added, “Ain’t no way Hannah won over Keyla, but hey….popularity wins……”
Others defended the winner passionately. One fan celebrated, “Finally! Someone good won!” while another chimed in, “Soo happy for Hannah I had her picked since her audition she’s bout to take off in her career fast country is big rn [sic].”
Some viewers also praised the show’s return to a female country winner. “It’s been years since we’ve had a female country artist!!! Wow! She’s amazing,” one viewer posted.
Not everyone was fully convinced, though. Another commenter wrote, “Hannah has a beautiful voice but her voice was not flawless like Jordan! But ok and congratulations.”
Some viewers were even more dramatic. On Reddit, one commenter joked, “RiGgEd! When we storming the Idol Capitol? #STOPTHESTEAL.”
Another complained, “Woah okay the way Hannah’s parents got a whole interview and she got her own duet vs. Jordan getting Daniel added and his parents shafted is crazy.”
