Missing teen found trapped inside chimney after 7-year search

A Disappearance That Raised Questions

Joshua Maddux went out for a walk in 2008 — and never returned.

The 18-year-old from Woodland Park was known for his love of nature, often exploring nearby forests alone. On May 8, he told his sister he was going for a walk, but he never came back.

A massive search followed. His family and police combed the area, but no trace of Joshua was found. As months turned into years, hope slowly faded, though his family held onto the belief he might one day return.

A Shocking Discovery

Seven years later, in 2015, construction workers made a grim find while demolishing an abandoned cabin nearby.

Inside a chimney, they discovered a mummified body — later confirmed to be Joshua.

He was found in a fetal position, wearing only a thin shirt. His clothes were neatly folded inside the cabin. Even more puzzling, a heavy piece of furniture had been moved to block the chimney from the inside.

Conflicting Theories

An autopsy found no signs of trauma, drugs, or violence. The initial conclusion suggested he may have climbed into the chimney and died from hypothermia.

But the cabin’s owner strongly disputed this, claiming a metal mesh at the top would have made entry impossible.

Investigators later admitted the case was highly unusual. The position of Joshua’s body suggested he may have entered head-first — something that would have been extremely difficult to do alone.

Rumors and tips pointed to possible foul play, including claims someone had bragged about putting him “in a hole,” but nothing could be proven.

A Mystery That Remains

Despite reopening the case, authorities were unable to determine exactly what happened.

For Joshua’s family, the discovery brought answers — but also more questions.

To this day, the case remains unsolved, leaving behind a haunting mystery of how a young man ended up trapped inside a chimney just blocks from home.
